Important Conversations

While working with Liz in the South Bronx Center, she sometimes asks me to talk with girls about chastity and choices after she has already counseled them for their current situation. Though the results of these conversations are not usaully as dramatic as an abortion turn-around, I am realizing that these conversations are some of the most important that I have had. Being there for a girl when no one else is supporting her, letting her know that she is worthy of respect and strong enough to expect it, just talking and listening person to person is so important in this culture that screams the opposite. This work is not only "save the babies", which is noble and difficult in and of itself, but it is also to show the girls and women respect and make a positive change in the culture of abuse, apathy, and disrespect.
