Clash of Cultures

Today was full of shocking events at the Brooklyn office. The most touching of them all is the case of a Christian, Indian girl and her Muslim, Parkistani boy friend. The girl is about 7 weeks pregnant. They did not want the baby for fear of both parents. The Indian girl said her parents never approved of her relationship with a Parkistani, let alone marrying him. Culture and religion are at the heart of it all. It is like a taboo for an Indian girl to choose her spouse: it is the parents' duty to do so since they 'know what is best for their daughter'.

The love between the two is so obvious and emulative that it was tempting to tell them to elope and get married. Later on, we went into the sonogram room. The sonogram technician did everything possible to get the heart beat of the almost invisible fetus but to no avail. Chance is that they may have had their wish: the baby may have died in the womb. She was then advised to seek emergency medical attention immediately.

Don't you think the baby was 'scared to death'? He was never wanted, and so he went to his God who loves and wants him. Imagine a culture which makes a couple hate and seek to kill their baby just to avoid the annoyance and diapproval of their parents. May God forgive our many failings and ignorance.
