An Abortion Story

"Do you know anyone who has had an abortion?" This was a common question I asked as people stopped on the street to talk to us. We had set up a table with information about abortion and our goal was to educate and engage passersby.

"Yes" was always the answer. Whether it was "yes I know someone" or "yes, I've had an abortion" or both, everyone said "yes".

The sad reality is that virtually everyone has an abortion story. The beautiful thing about dialogue about these stories is that it has potential to prevent future abortions.

I talked to a man who said his girlfriend was pregnant and was planning to abort. I was able to set him up with our resources so that his girlfriend would have support and hear the truth.

I talked to a woman who was pregnant and needed help. Another counselor was able to walk her upstairs to our center.

Another counselor was able to console a crying woman who had had an abortion when she was fourteen and still suffering greatly because of it thirty years later.

How seriously important our mission is here at EMC, and for all of those in this battle for life. We are setting out to make abortion stories a thing of the past.
