thank you very much.

Pablo Torrellas

Carmen Ortilles

Hello my name is Carmen I`m from Spain and I live in Pamplona. I study law at the University of Navarra. The reason why I`m here is because I think that the labour that do this organization is incredible and I want to take part in this war against the abortion. I think we can do more to save lifes and this is what I want to do this summer.
Thanks. Good bless you

The mother comes first

One of the saddest things about this job is hearing about women who have had past abortions, and are now right back in the same situation that they started in. The reasons that they didn’t want to have a child are still the same, but they still had sex and they still want to be free of the consequences. Almost every woman with a past abortion experience admits that it effected her in some way. Many still think about the baby that they aborted.
They know how old he would have been and they grieve each year on what would have been his birthday. They still cry themselves to sleep at night. They wake up at night and think that they can hear the baby crying. Most of them admit that the abortion that was supposed to be a “quick fix” made their lives muchworse, and they regretted the decision.
However, many of them put themselves through that pain a second time, desperate to believe societies lies that abortion will make it like there was never a baby in the first place. They want everything to go back to the way that it was, but it can’t. Whether they have an abortion or carry their baby to term, the baby changes things from the moment that it is conceived. Most of the women who have abortions believe that it is wrong; most of them acknowledge that the baby is alive. They cannot lie to themselves, but they choose to ignore the facts.
Almost worse, though, are the horror stories that women tell about the physical complications that accompany abortion. It is easy for some women to dismiss the possibility of emotional trauma, but it is much harder to ignore stories of women who have been there and experienced the horror for themselves.

People want to believe that abortions are safe and quick, but the truth is that woman are being hurt every day. It is not only the babies who are victims of abortions, but the women who are never told what may happen to them.

My first Turn Around

7.30 am in the morning.

Planned Parenthood in Manhattan.

Coming from the subway, some girls cross the street and go inside. We try to talk to them.
Some listen, others don't.

A girl walks by me, she doesn't look very convinced and I approach her. She stops her way and listens. She hardly talks but I see she's thoughtful. 2 minuts later she goes inside the clinic and we wait outside, without crossing the line.

45 minuts later.

 She walks out.
She looks annowed and very worried. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" she cryes at the phone. She's quarrelling with somebody: her mother? her boyfriend? her sister? Some people across the street look at her but she doesn't care.

She hangs up the phone. I come near but she doesn't want to talk. I wait for her to calm down. She walks up and down the street, she looks very worried.

10 minutes later

She approaches and talks to us. She's 6 months pregnant. This was the third time she goes to the clinic. Each of them they tell her to wait, to wait, to wait. She's tired of waiting. This time was the identity card. She forgot it at home and they wouldn't let her do the abortion without it. In two days, the 4th of July. The clinic will be closed and she will have to wait even more.

But that's not everything. Her mother doesn't know. Neither the guy. But everybody on the street does, it's obvious she's pregnant.
She doesn't want the abortion. At least not now. She feels the baby inside her.

She lives in Brookling. We call Linda and make the appointment straight forward. She stops crying and leaves us heading the office.

2 hours later

Linda calls: the baby is going to be born! We are happy, even if we know we didn't save her. What saved her was a forgotten ID:Coincidence? Luck?  I would call it PROVIDENCE.

Guillermo

Hi! I'm Guillermo Arza, from Pamplona, Spain. I arrived on the States past friday after a long journey. I study architecture at the University of Navarra and i have just one year left for finishing my degree. I've been several times in NYC and other parts of the Stases as part of my family lives in here. I'm the second of five brothers, and got here due to a friend that told me about this volunteer internship at EMC.

I found really interesting and motivating the fact of spending a summer trying to help people, and in this case, trying to make bigger an organization which makes such a great thing in NYC. I truly believe in life from the very first moment of conception and hope to share this idea with as much people as i can.

I'm actually in Philly with four more interns, collaborating with Alpha Pregnancy Center and I will do my best trying to help as much as possible to those who need it!

Queens

Last  Tuesday i got my first chance to speak with women alone. I was sent to the queens office with marina. It was our first time there and we couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous. However, that feeling disappeared as soon as the first woman came in to the office. We suddenly felt very excited and hoped for the best. I had no idea what her situation was or what we were going to say to her but I prayed to the Holy Spirit asking for help and inspiration. Like Linda says, we don’t save the babies, god saves them and the mother comes first. I believe that in this internship we are Gods instruments and are here to get across his message to other people. Because of this, God helps us while counseling the moms. I don’t think I could ever have spoken with true confidence to them if it wasn’t for Gods help.

At the end of the day, four moms had come to see us, two bringing  their babies fathers and two alone. We had one turn around which was the best news possible, another was undecided, another one wanted to parent and the last one took a pregnancy test and it came out negative. Overall, I enjoyed my experience in Queens and am grateful to Marina for helping me and to God above all

TWO FACES

One of the problems in our society is trying to fit in. We change our personalities, our styles of life and more things.

Today I watched an interview with a teenager. She said that she didn't like her attitude during her years in highschool. She had to be someone that she wasn't, only because she thought that nobody likeed her.

We have two faces. One inside and the other outside. The cause of that is fear. We are afraid of what everybody think. That is not our fault. It is because of society.

Moreover fear is the cause of the lack of freedom. We can't express our feelings. We should ignore what everybody thinks. It's difficult but not imposible.

This reminded me of the movie called Juno. I like her way of carrying the situation. She was afraid like many pregnant women but she gave her child the opportunity at life.

What would we do if we got pregnant in highschool? maybe we would first think about what others will say. We should learn how to make educated and mature decisions without having relying on other's opinions.

A bad decision could damage the rest of our lives.

An exception to the exception

"In 1964 a fifteen-year-old girl was raped, became pregnant, and decided to carry her unborn child to term. Five months after the baby girl was born, in an act of courage and love the young mother provided her child a better environment by giving her to an adoptive family. That child was Pam Stenzel. She is the oldest of 8 children… 7 adopted…1 biological, and her extended family includes 38 adopted children in all."

It was this week in Brooklyns office when I saw the video of a conference that Pam Stenzel was giving to college students, while she was talking to them she inspired me with her words, the way she wanted to be understood was so clear and so close at the same time. She counseled so many girls and always talked to them with opened-heart and experience taught her all the things she was telling about to the students, true things, true life. And watching her talk it also came to my mind the importance of good communication with others, with the world, because we can have great ideas, or values, or thoughts but the words in our lips are the ones that can talk from soul to soul.

This case like any other of the thousands that exist that are different from each other, but we can say about it that many people use to say that they could think that the only exception to let abortion happen could be in cases of rapement, the explanation is that is such a complex situation that could be an excepted abortion, and here she is, a great woman that could have changed in all this years the lifes of hundreds of people, and she was the exception of an exception, that also not only taught something to the people who talked but me, that within a video she made me think.

Every person is so unique, so important, such a gift, that we have to transmit the mothers that want to abort about the amazing act of love and courage that involves what the mother of Pam did, and how their baby needs to be the exception of exceptions, because in society nowadays more and more people find excuses to justify abortion as an exception in a moment of their lives.

Mike

Last week four of us went with Chris to Washington and other cities to visit pro-lifers. Some of them will host interns during this summer who will work in the new offices we are opening.
On the first night of the trip, Mike -an old friend of Chris- invited us to dinner. His pro-life work is an example and a proof of the importance that each and everyone of us has helping with the pro-life work.
Mike used to work for a big company in Manhattan; he was even a partner of the company. Once retired, instead of staying at home, he drives an hour and a half every morning to an abortion clinic, where we tries to talk to the girls and make them change their mind and offers post-abortion therapy. He stands there Winter and Summer, with cold and hot weather, rainy or snowy…
Taking into account that the average number ofgirls who change their mind is around 3 and 5 %, isn’t it amazing the passion he works with every day?
I was truly impressed by this story Chris told us, and I hope that neither of us complains about the bad weather or standing up for some hours because we are young and doing this for a short time. Mike is an example of commitment for all of us.

Mr. Brightside

This post may be a little different from what I tend to write, mainly because its in spanish, but also because it is not a concrete story of one of the women that came to the offices, its a mix of them, a bunch of the experiences that they have shared with me during some counseling sessions. I think it actually represents pretty well how a young girl feels when she finds out she is pregnant and its in spanish because some of the expressions are more powerful in my tongue mother language. I hope you like it.

POSITIVO

Tal y como lo cuenta Brandon Flowers en esa canción: She's touching his chest now, he takes off her dress now, let me go...

Smile

Life in the office is undoubtedly the experience that has helped me most in my life. Every day women come in and you learn a lot of aspects that will help you later in your daily life.

Although Queens office is very small, this means, has a small size, it is, although it sounds paradoxical, great. This greatness lies in a task for extraordinary society. Each day helps a lot of ladies, Whatever decision they choose, they find in our walls a place to talk quietly about their worries and concerns. And most importantly, where mourn. I like to tell that here we provide free tissues too. Thus, we laughed.

We laughed, we cried and we understand. What more could we want?

A  little woman walks with her ex boyfriend cheerful glued to a phone. I clarify this, because he did not detachment of the unit in the entire stay, which I found very funny and gave rise to a broad conversation. . She was worried if she could be pregnant, was only 21 years old and wanted an abortion. By providing some information, such as date of your last period, I realized that this girl was completely unaware of the functioning of the female reproductive tract. After a few videos explaining it, human development and abortion procedures, the nice lady thanked us more than 10 times. She insisted that hopefully they explained these things in school, so many girls would care more and not want an abortion. What more can we ask?

Thank you for your sweet smile.

Last experiences

The last experience i have experienced is similar to the one that i explained last week in my daily blog. The other day i went to an abortion clinic located in The Bronx. There were so many girls that wanted to have an abortion, but we tried to convince them that abortion is not the solution to their problems. All the problems are small compared to abortion, so is not like a solution, but a problem. I want to remember one famous philosopher that said: you cannot find peace by avoiding life.

All my experience have been adquired during my days in the abortion clinic, so i can say that it has been a tough days.

Thank you for reading the blog and see you in the next post.

GOOD MORNINIG BALTIMORE

Our next three weeks...

On Monday afternoon we took the big van Chris has where there's place for 10 of us towards the airport. Over there we picked up 2 new interns and started our way to Baltimore, where Almu and I were going to stay for 3 weeks. They had to spend the night there as well because we arrived late at night, about 11.30pm, and it was better to have a rest there and continue the following day to Virginia, where the rest of the interns where going to stay for a few days.

When we arrived to Diane's house late at night, she was waiting for us with a really good dinner. She showed us the rooms we would stay in, we each have our own bedroom which is simple but very complete, tidy and comfortable. She's a lovely lady who has being in the pro-life movement for a long time and has now volunteered to keep us with her for 3 weeks. We have also met his son and his family, and they are all as nice as her. Two other boy interns are also staying in Baltimore for 3 weeks in another house. We are half hour drive but we see each other every day at work and in the evenings.

We are very comfortable in this city, very happy where we are staying, getting on very well with pro-life people we have met here and looking forward to doing a good job in Baltimore.

OHIO

Ayer llegamos Nuria y yo a Dayton, Ohio.

Same country, different style

Last weekend a group of eight pro-life volunteers went to Washington, the United States capital. We stayed in Alexandria, a beautiful town near Washington with nice buildings and kind people. Alexandria is close to Washington so we spent a lot of time there. We visited a lot of museums like the American History Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Holocaust Memorial Museum. The last one was the one I enjoyed  the most.
Washington is like the opposite of New York: green, quiet, nice and relaxed. They live like time doesn´t exist, they enjoy themselves  all the time. We were very surprised because people always are happy although they don’t have the best jobs in the world. We were very impressed by the happiness of one street cleaner, he was singing and polite with all the people while he worked, INCREDIBLE!! We said: that in Spain this doesn’t happen. The time stops while you walk through the Smithsonian area to Lincoln Memorial surrounded by large gardens and fountains.
Washington and New York there are two important cities in the United States, same country different style…

At crucial junctures, every individual makes decisions, and…every decision is individual...

I found this phrase in the Holocaust museum of Washington Dc during our weekend there with some of the interns that now are split in Baltimore or Philadelphia for three weeks.

This phrase in my opinion represents perfectly the situation that girls have to affront every time that they want to have an abortion.  Why? Because many of them don’t have “the four legs of the life”: faith, family support, resources and education.
So when they get pregnant they start thinking about materials things: “I do not have enough money for feed my kid”, “I do not have a permanent job and they will not accept my pregnancy” etc. It is totally normal to have this thoughts but the problem is not the lack of resources because there are many organizations than can help this women to get what they need.
The second thought  is correlate to family support and the ideas that they make in their brains are: “My boyfriend broke up with me when I told him about my pregnancy”, “I live alone, I do not have any relatives who can help me with my kid” and many other things that we are founding out with this internship.  It is true that family is one of the precious things that we have in live, but if you are alone, there are places like ALPHA (organization prolife in Philadelphia) that can be like the family support that they never had.
In my opinion the main problem is the lack of education in the modern society that we live. The government and the public schools don’t provide any information about the consequences and risks of taking an abortion. They don’t teach stuff like abstinence or the importance of the waiting. They just offer pills or condoms to “prevent” the pregnancy. And this is not working and they don’t want to stop this, they just want to earn all the money that they can and be happy in their unreal world.
The last leg is faith. In my opinion, faith is the best “tool” for everything and it can help you with the others legs. For example, if in the school you didn’t receive good education, you can find all the information and more that you need in the catechism of the Catholic Church. Also if your family support is off, God is your father and He is always taking care of you, and we can´t forget our Mother Mary.

Nowadays

When we visited Washington d.c we could be able to visit the Holocaust Museum that is a living memorial to the Holocaust, and inspires citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. Well, how can we not think for a moment after seeing such horrors represented in this museum, in which we remembered that once humanity was lead to losing the path of respect and caring about the dignity in human life and that ended in a huge tragedy. But now, that we speak and think of progress, like really sure we have approached it since then and were people of importance sit down to discuss how can be the needs and respects of live of people improved... but the reality is that in 2008, approximately 1.21 million abortion took place in the U.S., down from an estimated 1.29 million in 2002, 1.31 million in 2000 and 1.36 million in 1996. From 1973 through 2008, nearly 50 million legal abortions have occurred in the U.S. (AGI). And based on available state-level data, an estimated 1.16 million abortions were performed in 2009, 1.13 million were performed in 2010, and 1.06 million in 2011. How can this be a progress for humanity, have we not learned about the meaning of life and the importance of protecting it? And not only once the little boy its running wild throw the park playing with his friends its when we realize thats a life, no, because that boy was conceived and carried in the woom for nine moths before that, and he could be able to do that because he was born.

Mikel Díaz

Hello my name is Mikel Díaz, I'm 22 years old and I'm from Vitoria, the capital of the Basque Country in northern Spain. I'm studying Architecture at the University of Navarra, Pamplona, and I've finished my fourth year. During these four years I've  lived in a university residence, with another 80 students, where I've learnt to give to others, to live and care more for others than for oneself, something that is very focused on what we do here. Was there in the residence where a friend told me about this volunteer and I did not thought twice and I got in touch with Chris.
What better way to spend a summer to do in favor of life and love.
I arrived to NY last Thursday after a long flight, and after a fantastic weekend with some mates in Washington DC, I'm in Baltimore for 3 weeks, to continue our work in counseling.

Life lover

"She loved to dance, bachata salsa, merengue... It did not matter to her! She just loved dancing. And she used to go to the park to feed the ducks. She loved feeding the ducks, but not that big brown one! She would try not to give it anything, as he would always try to get everything and leave nothing for the baby ones."

Those were the words of one of Magaly´s sons at her funeral.

Everybody talked about the millions of babies that she saved and about the Mission that Magaly had started all over South America, and how much she fought for the culture of life. But he just said those words... The most tender and sweet words of a son that just lost her mum.

And those were the words that touched me the most. She was a life saver, a real life hero, but if she got to save so many lives, it was just because above all she was a LIFE LOVER. She loved life and all that came with it.

I was very lucky to get to meet all her family, friends and companions being there at her funeral, but I would invite everyone to just spare 5 minutes to read about this incredible woman and feel the inspiration. God talks through people, and this is a clear example.

Magaly Llaguno, Rest in peace. Thank God for the blessing she´s been for everyone.

Sadness

I want to talk in this post about something really sad I lived this week in Planned Parenthood. Interns go to abortion facilities not just to save babies but to help everyone who is involved in an abortion.

What happened is that there were two black men speaking, and I got closed. One of them asked me if I was also waiting for my "lady". I answered I wasn't, why was I there and began to speak with them. One of them told me he was also totally against abortion. He said: "I have already four children. My wife is inside. I work really hard to mantain my four children, and I work really hard to mantain the one who is inside this clinic too." That moved me and I was near to cry, I hope this man won't be affected for the consequences of his wife's decission, because he doesn't deserve it. And I hope that when they quarrel every argue won't end with a: "you killed my baby", something he will be on his right to say but that may end up with his marriage. I wish the best in his life for this great man.

Be aware for safe care

This first week at EMC has been very complete; I have been sent to the Queens office where I had the chance to do some counseling. The one that has moved me more was a conversation with this girl, she was 22 and this was the first time she is pregnant. She couldn't understand how that happened given the fact that she has been using protection and taking the Plan B in several occasions, but as we can see, this time that wasn't enough.

What I found unbelievable was the fact that a girl of more or less my age, was totally unaware of the abortion pill's side effects, and how innocently she could believe that Plan B ALWAYS works which is not only false but also hazardous.

Why did nobody explain this girl that Plan B creates a total maladjustment of the body? Or about how uneffective the abortion pill is between the 6th and the 9th week of the pregnancy, failing in 80% of the cases and making those women going through surgery, therefore exposing themselves to more serious consequences?

Ignorance frightens me, and it frightens me a lot. I find very scary that society thinks that Plan B has no risks. For God's sake, of course it does have risks, plenty of them in fact!

Obviously I cannot get angry with this girl for being unaware of these things, its not her fault. This is what big businesses like Planned Parenthood want: ignorant women. They want them to buy their pills, they sell them as "the magic thing", you take one, no suffering, no side effects and what's more important: the problem (they never use the word "baby" they are too cool for school, or simply, they don't want to lose clients for that) would be gone.

That is simply FALSE. There are always going to be complications, a lot of internal and external bleedings, you would feel dizzy most of the time, suffer several headaches and that sensation of being sick and have pain for maybe weeks.

So please don't tell me that you don't know you can get ill from taking the pill. Please don't let them win. It's not your money that matters me, but your life.

Please be clever and get informed. Please be safe. Please be aware.
